Owings Mills, Md. - The Drexel field hockey team dropped its regular season finale at Towson, 4-2, as the Dragons had their four-game winning streak snapped at the hands of the Tigers. The Dragons, who had already sewn up third place in the Colonial Athletic Association, completed the regular season with an 11-8 record and a 5-3 mark in the CAA. Towson improved to 8-10 overall and 3-5 in the conference.
Towson jumped all over the Dragons in the first half as the Tigers posted four straight goals to lead 4-0 going into halftime. Kajee Murangi scored Towson's first goal less than three minutes into the contest. Christina Boarman converted a penalty stroke at 18:16. With less than three minutes remaining in the period the Tigers added two more goals including Murangi's second of the day. The four goals allowed by the Drexel defense was just one less than the squad had allowed in its previous seven conference games combined.
The Dragons looked to rebound in the second half as Sarah Gostomski scored a goal on a penalty corner for the second straight game. Drexel was unable to add another goal until less than eight minutes remained when Jennifer Bolger scored on a penalty corner that was assisted by Gostomski. Drexel would get no closer as Towson hung on for the victory.
Colleen McAndrew made nine saves in the cage for Drexel while Michelle Cheek stopped 10 shots for the Tigers. Towson outshot Drexel 16-13, while the Dragons held a 10-8 edge in penalty corners.
The Dragons will face sixth-seeded Hofstra in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 1 at 8:30 p.m. at the United States Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va. The game will follow the 6:00 p.m. game pitting fourth-seeded Northeastern against fifth-seeded Towson.
